You’ve cleaned out the fruit bowl, rinsed the recycling, scrubbed the drain, and there are still a dozen tiny flies circling the bananas. That’s the moment for a trap. Not before: the University of Kentucky is clear that all potential breeding areas must be located and eliminated. A trap only catches the adults that are already flying around (my note).

So this is a recommendation, not a review. I haven’t tested these traps. I read the product listings and the makers’ own instructions, compared how each one works, and picked one for the counter and one for the outlet. If I had fruit flies tomorrow, these are the two I’d choose between.

Why this one (my kitchen-counter pick): the TERRO Fruit Fly Trap 4-Pack sits right next to the fruit bowl, where fruit flies gather. It uses a food-based liquid lure, the listing says each trap gives “up to 45 days of continuous protection.” The “180 day lure supply” is the total for all four traps, so about 45 days per trap: with all four out at once, the lure lasts about 45 days. No outlet, no batteries.

The downside: it only catches what it attracts with the lure, and it needs topping up with lure. For flies spread over several rooms, or gnats around plants, the Zevo below can be the better fit. Its own trade-off: it needs a free wall outlet in the right spot and new cartridges as long as you use it.

What I based it on: the Amazon listings of both traps and Zevo’s own product page and FAQ, checked on October 26, 2026. I haven’t tested either trap.

Why it’s here: fruit flies come for fermenting fruit, and this trap meets them right there. The listing describes “liquid bait” that “attracts and eliminates fruit flies within days,” and the apple shape means it doesn’t look like a pest trap on your counter. With four traps you could, for example, put one by the fruit bowl, one by the sink and one by the trash (my tip). Just keep in mind that using all four at once uses up the whole lure supply in about 45 days. The listing also says to “place near fruit fly breeding areas,” which fits the University of Kentucky’s advice to set traps wherever the flies are seen.

Watch out for: the lure is a liquid. Put the traps where they won’t get knocked over, and keep them out of reach of kids and pets (my advice).

Why it’s here: not every kitchen has flies only at the fruit bowl. Zevo says the trap “uses blue and UV light to attract flying insects,” and the sticky pad faces the wall, so you don’t see the catch and never touch it. It works day and night and catches gnats too, which is handy if you’re not sure which tiny fly you have. The set with 3 refills means you can swap cartridges a few times before you need more.

Watch out for: placement matters. Zevo says to use outlets the insects can easily reach, away from furniture, curtains and corners, not behind a door, and not next to TV or computer screens. Zevo says the light starts blinking after 6 weeks as a reminder to check the cartridge; it isn’t a fixed replacement date. You replace it when the sticky pad is full, and Zevo doesn’t give a fixed cartridge lifespan.

The trade-off: it needs a free wall outlet in a good spot, which not every kitchen has, and you keep buying replacement cartridges as long as you use it.

Refills: already have a base? The Zevo refill cartridges, 4 count fit both the Zevo MAX and the regular Zevo Flying Insect Trap, according to the listing. Zevo’s own product page says this device “only fits Full Size Refills,” so check that the refill pack matches your base before you order.

When a Trap Won’t Help

A trap is the last step, not the first. If fruit flies keep breeding in a drain, a forgotten potato or a sticky recycling bin, every trap in the world is just counting them. The University of Kentucky says all potential breeding areas must be located and eliminated. Start with the 4-step plan to get rid of fruit flies, and use the trap for the flies that are left.

Using Traps Safely

  • Read the label of any trap before you use it, and keep traps and lure bottles away from children and pets (my advice).
  • Zevo is an electrical device. Zevo’s FAQ: “As with other electrical devices, please keep away from children.” Don’t use it outdoors where rain can reach it.
  • No spray needed. Washington State University lists no insecticide as recommended for fruit flies. Never spray over food or the counter you cook on.

Trap Questions

What is the best trap for fruit flies?

There is no single best one; it depends on where the flies are. For flies around the fruit bowl, a lure trap like the TERRO 4-Pack sits right where they gather. For flies and gnats in several rooms, a plug-in light trap like the Zevo works day and night. Both only catch adults, so remove the breeding source too.

Where should I put a fruit fly trap?

Close to where the flies breed and gather: next to the fruit, the sink, the trash or the recycling. For a plug-in trap, pick an open outlet away from furniture, curtains and screens.

Do fruit fly traps work on gnats?

Zevo says its trap catches fruit flies and gnats. The TERRO listing is about fruit flies. Fungus gnats breed in wet potting soil, so letting the soil dry out matters more than any trap.

Is a homemade trap as good as a store-bought one?

A jar of cider vinegar with a paper funnel is the trap the University of Kentucky describes, and it costs almost nothing. Store-bought traps are tidier and last longer between refills.

Has Marleen tested these traps?

No. This is a recommendation, not a review: these are the traps she would choose, based on the product listings and the makers’ instructions.
