Pantry moth traps work as a warning system, not a cure. They use a sex pheromone that attracts male Indianmeal moths; UC IPM says they “won’t attract the female moths.” A trap tells you moths are still around and may cut down egg laying, but only removing the infested food ends the problem. Place the trap where the infestation was and check it weekly. UC IPM says most traps stay effective for about three months.

How a Pantry Moth Trap Works

Most pantry moth traps are a small cardboard tent or card with a sticky inside and a lure. UC IPM explains that Indianmeal moth traps use a sex pheromone, the scent a female uses to attract mates. Males fly toward it and get stuck. Females aren’t drawn in. That’s the whole catch, literally: half the population, and not the half that lays eggs.

Still useful? Yes, in two ways. UC IPM says the traps may reduce egg production if they catch males before they mate, and, more importantly, they show you whether you still have moths after a clean-out.

What a Trap Can and Can’t Do

  • Show you moths are still aroundA new catch means it’s time to inspect your packages again (UC IPM).
  • Catch males before they mateWhich may reduce egg laying (UC IPM).
  • Catch femalesThey “won’t attract the female moths” (UC IPM).
  • Reach larvae in the foodThe caterpillars stay in the flour, cereal or nuts until you throw them out.

How to Use Them Well

  1. Clean out first. Find the infested food, bag it and take it outside, check every package, vacuum and wash the shelves: the full clean-out.
  2. Place the trap where the infestation was. That’s UC IPM’s advice.
  3. Check it every week. Write the date on the trap when you put it up (my tip).
  4. Replace it after about three months. UC IPM says most traps remain effective for about that long; replace it sooner if the sticky surface is full (my advice).
  5. Treat a new catch as a clue. UC IPM says a new catch means you should inspect your food packages again.

Keep using a trap after the clean-out: UC IPM notes that pantry pests can survive “for many weeks without food,” so a few stragglers can show up long after you think you’re done.

Moth Traps vs Beetle Traps

If the bugs in your pantry are beetles, a moth trap won’t help. UC IPM explains that beetle traps use aggregation pheromones that attract both males and females, and that some traps are made to attract several species at once. Not sure what you have? See pantry bugs: weevils and beetles. For moths in the closet rather than the kitchen, you need a trap made for clothes moths: pantry moths vs clothes moths.

What About Homemade Moth Traps?

You’ll find plenty of homemade moth trap recipes online, but none of the extension sources I used describes one for pantry moths. The pheromone is what makes a pantry moth trap work, and that’s not something you can mix at home. My advice: spend the effort on the clean-out and good containers, and use a ready-made pheromone trap for monitoring.

Use Traps Safely

  • Sticky traps belong out of reach of children, cats and dogs (my advice). A sticky card stuck to fur or fingers is no fun.
  • Keep traps off open food and follow the instructions on the package.
  • Don’t add sprays. UC IPM says insecticides “aren’t recommended for any of the pantry pests,” and spraying near food may cause more harm than the pests.

Trap Questions

Do pantry moth traps really work?

They work for monitoring. They attract male moths with a pheromone and may reduce egg laying, but they don’t attract females or reach the larvae. Removing infested food is what ends an infestation.

Where should I put a pantry moth trap?

Where the infestation was, according to UC IPM. Check it weekly; UC IPM says most traps stay effective for about three months.

How long do pantry moth traps last?

UC IPM says most traps remain effective for about three months. Replace one sooner if the sticky surface is full or dusty (my advice).

Why is my moth trap empty but I still see moths?

The trap only attracts males of the moth it’s made for. You may be seeing females, a different moth such as a clothes moth, or the trap may be too far from the source.
