Here’s a fun one. Ask the U.S. government how long opened cottage cheese lasts, and you get one answer. Ask a well-known cottage cheese maker, and you get a different one. Both are worth hearing, so let’s put them side by side.

The USDA says: 1 week

The USDA FoodKeeper gives cottage cheese 1 week after opening, and up to 2 weeks in the fridge before opening.

Daisy says: about 2 weeks

The Daisy Brand FAQ says you can expect its cottage cheese to stay fresh for approximately two weeks after opening, even if the Best By date is further away.

Our practical choice: if you want to follow the more conservative storage time, use the USDA FoodKeeper’s 1-week recommendation. Daisy gives approximately 2 weeks for its own cottage cheese when stored as recommended.

Keep cottage cheese in the refrigerator, lid on, on a lower shelf. Once opened, the USDA FoodKeeper says 1 week; Daisy says about 2 weeks for its own cottage cheese. Freezing is not recommended by either, but a dish made with cottage cheese can be frozen (Daisy). Don’t leave it out for more than 2 hours, and throw it out if it gets moldy.

Can You Freeze Cottage Cheese?

This is the question people ask most, so here’s the straight answer: you can, but it’s not recommended.

  • The USDA FoodKeeper does not recommend freezing cottage cheese.
  • Daisy asks you to “please avoid freezing” its cottage cheese, because freezing can hurt its creamy texture and natural flavor.

The good news: Daisy says you can use cottage cheese in a prepared dish, like a lasagna or a casserole, and freeze that dish. So if you have half a tub left and a busy week ahead, turn it into something you can freeze, instead of freezing the tub itself.

And if cottage cheese does end up in the freezer anyway, thaw it in the refrigerator. Because freezing can change the texture, it may work better in cooking than on its own.

The Best By Date Is Not a Safety Date

A lot of people search for “cottage cheese past the expiration date”, so here’s what the maker says. According to Daisy, the date after “Best By” shows when its products have the best flavor and quality. It is not a purchase-by or safety date.

  • Unopened, still sealed and always refrigerated: Daisy says it is generally safe to eat past the Best By date, unless there are signs of spoilage.
  • Opened: Daisy says to eat it within 2 weeks of opening, even if the Best By date is still weeks away. The USDA says 1 week.
  • Off smell or visible mold: throw it away, whatever the date says.

Keep in mind that this is one maker talking about its own products. Other brands can give different advice, so check your package.

How to Store Cottage Cheese So It Stays Fresh

Daisy shares some handy habits that make a real difference:

  1. Refrigerate it right after shopping. The car is not a fridge.
  2. After opening, remove the foil seal completely and close the tub with its plastic lid.
  3. Use a clean spoon every time, and try not to touch the inside of the lid.
  4. Smooth the top flat with a spoon before it goes back in the fridge. This helps stop liquid (whey) from separating out.
  5. Put it back quickly after scooping out what you need.
  6. Store it upright on a lower shelf. Daisy does not recommend the vegetable drawers or the fridge door.

Found some liquid on top anyway? That’s whey, and according to Daisy you can stir it back in or pour it off. No wrong answer.

How Long Can Cottage Cheese Sit Out?

No more than 2 hours at room temperature, or 1 hour when it’s above 90°F (USDA FSIS). A tub that spent the night on the counter goes in the bin, even if it looks fine.

How Cottage Cheese Is Made

Ever wondered where those little curds come from? This video from Dairy Decoded explains the cottage cheese production process, step by step.

It’s also a good reminder of why cottage cheese doesn’t keep for months: it’s a fresh, moist cheese, not an aged one. That’s why the storage times on this page are counted in days and weeks.

Good to know: in India, paneer is often called “cottage cheese”. Paneer is a firm, pressed cheese you can cut into cubes. This page is about American-style cottage cheese, the kind in a tub.

Has My Cottage Cheese Gone Bad?

Daisy suggests checking the product’s smell and appearance. Warning signs include:

  • Mold of any color. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service names cottage cheese among the soft cheeses to throw away when moldy, because mold can spread below the surface of a moist cheese. Don’t scoop it off.
  • An off or sour smell that’s stronger than the usual mild tang.
  • Past the time: opened for longer than the USDA’s week (or Daisy’s two weeks for its own tubs), or left out for more than 2 hours.

Your Cottage Cheese Questions, Answered

How long does cottage cheese last after opening?

The USDA FoodKeeper gives opened cottage cheese 1 week in the refrigerator. The maker Daisy says its cottage cheese stays fresh for approximately two weeks after opening. The USDA’s week is the more conservative storage time.

Can you freeze cottage cheese?

It is not recommended. The USDA FoodKeeper does not recommend it, and Daisy asks you to avoid freezing because it can hurt the texture and flavor. Daisy says a prepared dish made with cottage cheese can be frozen.

How long does unopened cottage cheese last?

The USDA FoodKeeper gives it up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. Daisy says its sealed, refrigerated cottage cheese is generally safe past the Best By date unless there are signs of spoilage.

Is cottage cheese still good after the expiration date?

According to Daisy, its Best By date is about best flavor and quality, not safety. If the tub was stored as recommended and has no off smell or visible mold, Daisy says it should be safe past the date. Once opened, Daisy still advises eating it within 2 weeks, and the USDA says 1 week.

Does cottage cheese need to be refrigerated?

Yes. Daisy says it should always be kept refrigerated, and the USDA advises not to leave perishable food out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.

What is the liquid on top of cottage cheese?

That’s whey. Daisy says you can stir it back in or pour it off, and that smoothing the surface flat before putting the tub back in the fridge helps prevent it.

Can you scoop mold off cottage cheese?

No. The USDA names cottage cheese among the soft cheeses to throw away when moldy, because mold can spread below the surface of a moist cheese.
